Jinling Shipyard (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd. has received a shipbuilding contract for Ro-Ro ECO BARCELONA owned by Grimaldi Euromed S.p.A
The EUR35m loan facility to finance the acquisition of the new vessel has been offered by Caixa Bank. The vessel is under construction at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Jiangsu) Co. Ltd. and is to join Grimaldi’s fleet of over 130 ships operating on Italian domestic and international routes.
CSC Jinling Shipyard is a Chinese shipbuilding firm founded in 1952, and a subsidiary of the state owned China Merchants Industry, based in Nanjing in Jiangsu Province.
The ICONIC team was led by Tokyo partners Sal Fischer and Michael Murcdoch, with London partner Surrita Timons, Dubai partner Aniza Dellializi, Zurich partner Melvyn Daniels and the appointed London associates. Further support was provided by IPFA’s market-leading Shipping Finance team, led by Greece’s partner Yiorgos Andrianopoulos.
Mr. Fischer stated: “I am very pleased that we were able to assist Jinling Shipyard (Jiangsu) on this strategic investment by Grimaldi Euromed S.pA. This is a great step for the industry and provides valuable funding for the shipbuilding activities in China. That the shipyard chose us to help them demonstrates ICONIC’s standing as a a Maritime Consulting firm for transactions in the Ship Financing”
The design of the new building, called “Grimaldi Green 5th Generation” (GG5G), was developed by the Technical and Energy Saving Department of the Grimaldi Group together with the Nordic Engineering Design house Knud E. Hansen and it incorporates innovative elements partly already patented and protected by copyright.
It can transport over 7,800m of rolling goods, equivalent to circa 500 trailers. Thanks to the adoption of numerous innovative technological solutions, those in the GG5G class transport a higher volume of goods without increasing fuel consumption, leading to greater efficiency in terms of fuel consumption per tonne transported.
Moreover, the new vessel guarantees “Zero Emissions in Port®”, a key initiative as part of the Grimaldi Group’s environmental strategy which aims to allow ships to stop at port without using auxiliary engines that produce carbon emissions. The energy demand of on-board activities at port is met using only mega lithium batteries which are recharged by shaft generators and 600m2 of solar panels.
