The global maritime industry tends to feel demoralized or pessimistic about the oversupply of new ships, unprecedented volatility in freight rates and vessel values, economic uncertainty, risk of piracy, increasing regulation and environmental concerns.
So many game-changing factors heavily impacting financing opportunities in the maritime industry and so many ship owners do not believe they can succeed in tackling such challenges.
Ship owners, like any businesses, require equity financing to, inter alia, provide first loss support to debt investors. However, ship owners are normally highly leveraged and, while there is no strict rule, debt investors generally require only around 25% of total capital to be in the form of equity, with the balance of the total capital requirement coming from various debt instruments.
At the same time, capital market investors such as insurers, specialist fund managers, pension funds and sovereign wealth funds have increased their capacity to invest in shipping finance. Insurance companies and pension funds are, in fact, ‘natural’ investors in similar capital assets, since the long maturity and fixed rate nature of their investments are a good match to their long-term liabilities.
